The Quito Project 2007 Summary

Working closely with La Fundación San Martín, a non-profit organization in Quito:

  • We saw approximately 2000 patients in our free medical clinic
  • Tutored up to 80 children daily in math and reading.
  • Established weekly workshops at the request of community members.  Topics included: positive parenting, healthy cooking, family planning, and others.
  • Conducted a door-to-door needs assessment to collect data about the community
  • Photovoice Project: Community children took photos of healthy and unhealthy objects and situations in their community and presented them in an exhibition in the community.
  • Garden Project: Community children were given a plot of land and seeds to grow flowers and vegetables, learn about the water cycle, plant life cycle, and the importance of caring for the garden.
  • The dental clinic saw approximately 300 patients, completing basic dental procedures, extractions, cleaning, and nutrition/hygiene counseling.
