The Quito Project 2005 Summary

During the summer of 2005, 20 Quito Project participants traveled to Ecuador to volunteer in Chillogallo and San Martín, underserved communities in the southern outskirts of Quito:

  • 6 medical students
  • 2 physicians
  • 10 tutors
  • 2 engineers

Working closely with La Fundación San Martín, a non-profit organization in Quito, we provided critical assistance to the residents of San Martín and Chillogallo:

  • We saw 493 patients in our free walk-in clinic
  • We distributed over $5000 worth of medications, including anti-parasitics, antibiotics, anti-fungals, and more
  • We tutored children in math and reading for a total of 614 hours
  • We distributed 268 articles of clothing in our clinic
  • We distributed hundreds of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap in our clinic
  • We donated vitamins to a school for children with mental retardation
  • We built a $2,350 shower facility, complete with 2 laundry sinks, 2 showers, and 2 toilets.
  • We gave an introductory talk on basic nutrition and dental hygiene
